Focus

Once operational, the redeveloped hospital will include a multi-level tower with over 120 additional beds, new operating theatres, expanded maternity and paediatric services, and improved spaces for mental health support. Importantly, the design also allows for greater integration with Monash University, Peninsula Health, and local health services across the Mornington Peninsula.
Humanics Collective was engaged early in the process to ensure the new hospital is intuitive to navigate and supports a welcoming, stress-reducing experience for patients and visitors. From the outset, we worked closely with the architectural team at Bates Smart, the health planners, and the operators to embed wayfinding principles into the planning of entrances, public spaces, and clinical pathways.

Our focus has been on aligning the spatial layout with human behaviour. We’ve shaped arrival sequences, movement flows, and communication points so that people can find their way naturally, without needing to stop and figure it out. Given the vertical nature of the new tower and the site’s relationship to the existing hospital campus, this required careful coordination across multiple levels and departments.
The Frankston redevelopment shows the value of integrating user experience thinking into large-scale health projects from day one. This kind of early involvement helps avoid common pitfalls and creates a more seamless environment for patients, families, and staff. Our role continues as construction progresses, ensuring that what’s built delivers on the strategic intent and user needs that shaped the original brief.
