Helping people navigate flexible workplaces

AGL’s Melbourne head office introduced a new way of working. Designed by HASSELL, the interiors supported activity-based working, with no assigned desks and a flexible layout that changed frequently. People needed to be able to orient themselves quickly—whether arriving on a new floor or finding their way to a meeting room. But the signage couldn’t dominate the space.

We were brought in to create a location logic and signage system that enhanced clarity without competing with the interior design. The challenge was to support constant movement and spatial variation, while maintaining a sense of coherence across multiple levels.

We developed a floor-wide numbering system that applied to desks, rooms, and shared zones—designed to give users an immediate sense of where they were within the building. The system used a consistent stack logic across floors, so users could easily understand their location in relation to other levels. This helped people move confidently, regardless of whether they were returning to a familiar space or working from a different desk each day.

The signage design was kept deliberately clean, drawing from the modernist tone of HASSELL’s interiors. Elegant typographic treatments and a minimal material palette allowed the signs to support wayfinding without visual noise. Lift lobby signage provided a clear, central reference point on each floor, anchoring the system and helping people orient before stepping out.

The result is a quiet, confident wayfinding layer that integrates seamlessly into the environment—supporting flexible working without adding complexity.
